Your undefeated and #7 state ranked FM Hornets defeated the Henniger Black Knights 28-20 to win the AA2 title in a rainey, foggy slugfest at Hornet Field. Collin Simmons rushed for 202 yards on 23 carries against a very stout Henniger defense and showed why he is a front runner in the CNY POTY honors.
The Hornets started the scoring with a pretty 38 yard pass from Ike Bailey to Scott Kleinklaus. The Black Knights returned the favor but were stopped by a swarming FM defense led by LB Vinny Cupo on the 2 point conversion. Simmons then ripped off a 60 yard run with the Shield PAT the score was 14-6 at the half.
FM padded the lead with another spectacular 50 yard run by Simmons to make it 21-6 in the third quarter. There was no quit in the Black Knights and they fought their way back to 21-20 in the fourth. The Hornets answered with a nice drive capped by a Simmons 11 yard run late in the game. After the kick off and great special team coverage, the Black Knights had about 1:30 to score from their own 7 yard line. The FM D had other ideas, came close to sacking Henniger QB Tim Rommel in the end zone and shut down any hopes for a final comeback.
This was a great effort by both teams. Congratulations to the Hornets and the Coaching staff on a 7-0 regular season, winning the conference title and securing a #1 seeding for the upcoming playoffs.
